Milford Sound

I had despaired of seeing Milford Sound as it was too late to take a coach tour that morning. However, I had read of helicopter tours of Milford Sound and made some enquiries.

The weather wasn't good for flying that day, but Alpine Choppers offered to give me a call back if the weather improved enough for a flight.

YAY! it was only a couple of hours before Alpine Choppers said they could fit me in on a flight to Milford Sound.

I was soon collected from my hotel and taken to Queenstown Airport.  I like helicopters and I was lucky enough to be in the front seat for the flight.

The flight time to Milford Sound was a little over an hour, with great views of the settlement of Glenorchy, the Dart River and Mt Earnslaw; the Hollyford Valley and the main divide revealing Milford Sound and Mitre Peak.

We then transferred to a cruise ship for a cruise around Milford Sound.

Milford Sound is an amazing place with cascading waterfalls, seals and steep mountainsides.

The weather was changeable, with some dark brooding clouds part way through the cruise. One of the scariest moments for me was on the helicopter flight back, when we flew into a cloud with zero visibility! Thank goodness for radar.  I wouldn't have enjoyed flying into a mountain.
